Just right for Mother’s Day
Ideas for Mother’s Day gifts, with Suzie Abel of Jarrold
As well as showing the early signs of spring, March is all about mothers, mums, mummys and maters (though I don’t think there are many of those around these days!) Mother’s Day is a chance for us all to show how much we love and appreciate what they do for us throughout the year. These days it also extends to grandmothers and in fact, anyone who is like a mother to us. We women love pretty things and if they smell good or improve our looks, even better. I guarantee that any of these specially selected products will put a smile on the face of your own very special mum.
The rich soil, rain and sunshine of the Isparta Valley in Anatolia provide the perfect environment for the classic Turkish Damascene rose. Harvested in June during the cool pre-dawn hours, each flower is hand-picked and by the end of the season 2,500 tons of petals will have been collected and sent to the distillery to produce the rose essential oil. The resulting fragrance is a soft, light rose with none of the heaviness of an old fashioned floral. In the current fragrance industry, there is a return to popularity for the rose and what scent could be more appropriate for Mother’s Day. The letters stand for Donna Karan New York – a leading fashion label. Interestingly, DKNY also work very closely with CARE, a leading humanitarian organisation that helps lift women out of global poverty – 30ml eau de parfum £37.
Keith Haring was one of the most renowned of the young artists, filmmakers, performers and musicians, whose work responded to urban street culture in New York during the 1980s. Inspired by graffiti artists, his work is now instantly recognisable and his original designs, accentuating the life of the city, decorate both the bottle and the carton. The three new fragrances that make up the collection are Be Delicious Art, Fresh Blossom Art and Golden Delicious Art – this is my favourite, with raspberry and bergamot drizzled with mango nectar. I like this quote from Coco Chanel in 1964: “Scent is the unseen, unforgettable ultimate accessory to fashion, that heralds your arrival and prolongs your departure” 50ml eau de parfum £36.
These are two of the prettiest make-up products around for spring. The face powder is a lovely trio of fresh complexion boosting shades embossed with the Iris flower, in a shiny gold case and suitable for all skin tones. The Iris Blossom eye shadows look quite dramatic but can be subtle or bold, as you prefer. Both are £30.
These fabulous Italian handmade soaps continue to be so popular in the store. There are lots of flavours to choose from and they last for absolutely ages, exclusive to Jarrolds. From £4.50.
A real treat and such a pretty Mother’s Day present, three soaps in a delicate Rosewater scent nestle in a box designed by one of the BA Textile design students from Central St Martins, £12.
Crabtree and Evelyn, Raspberry Lip Shimmer
