UK Riots 2011

At last the government realizes there is a terrible sub-culture in this country. Yet again, the ordinary person on the street (up until now) has been suffering these ignorant, inconsiderate neanterthals with very little support from either the police or government. These young people lack so badly in both aspiration and resorcefullness that they have to resort to hanging about the streets making decent people feel intimidated and unwelcome.
It seems rather coincidental to me that the last decade where people knew their place within society was the 50s when national service was still in place, mmm, thought provoking isn't it. I am aware that young men of 18-20 were shouted at and made to do strange things during their service time but, how many of those (now elderly gents) would say it taught them teamwork, instill some self confidence, pride and self belief.
I know there are areas where the quality of life is not good i.e. job prospects, quality of housing etc. but, these problems can never be an excuse for total anarchy and lawlessness the like of which we have just observed.
The reports and interviews I have seen and heard defy belief i.e. Shop owners were recognizing regular visitors to their shops amongst the perpotrators and two girls interviewed refered to obtaining "free stuff" and "Its the governments fault... who are in now ?". A rioter or looter was heard to shout "We're getting something back for our taxes".  For goodness sake, I shudder to consider the future if this is an example of the ignorance within society today. A good indication of the type of person represented within the looters is when you read statistics showing that the most violated buisnesses were sports clothing shops, electrical goods (TVs and music systems) and mobile phone shops. Apparently book shops weren't touched, what does that tell you ??!!
I was heartened to see some community spirit surfacing during and after the riots when many brave people gathered on the streets to protect their shops an the crowds brandishing brooms ready for the clean-up. I was also pleased to hear some parents report their own children to the police for rioting and looting. There are still some wonderful people out there who are prepared to uphold morals and principles, its just a shame the few lesser-developed of the speces spoil it fot the many.

I has been interesting listening to government ministers discussing ideas such as civil national service for young people in the wake of the riots and looting of mid Aug 2011. It would be ironic indeed if the perpotrators who considered themselves so cool and radical were indeed the very instigators or cause for these initiatives to be introduced. I can't help smiling at the thought of some "cool dude" in his track suit, cap and trainers crawling out of bed to go and cut someones grass or do the washing up at an old peoples home.....vindication
