Listening to Old radios again

Vintage warm Valves

Do you remember those years when our ears were tuned into programs like ITMA, The Man in Black, Paul Temple Tony Handcock? Thanks to men like Marconi we enjoyed sitting around with winter curtains closed, being thoroughly entertained by warm valve radios.

Last Sunday I attended a vintage radio auction arranged by The British Vintage Wireless Society at Royal Wootton Bassette. I passed through the town and nodded with great respect at the memorial to the fallen. What took me
there? WellI wanted to see again an old wooden Cossor valve radio that aged 6, I found my family all huddled around listening to Neville Chamberlain announce “We are at war with Germany”.

When I arrived at The Memorial hall I found not only me
that had interest but over a hundred other dedicated people who regularly swap and restore vintage radios to ensure this era be remembered and enjoyed by generations to come.

As a taster perhaps you can find the answers to the following and perhaps add more in next months
Publication

1. Who did the BBC consider to be the first true 'disc jockey'?
2. Name the ventriloquist's dummy that had a show of his own.
3. Who had a 'Bumper Fun Book'?
4. Who wrote 'Journey into Space'?
5. Who was the Man in Black?
6. Which radio station used a gong as its call sign?
7. What does ITMA stand for?
