Can anyone remember these books?
Reply Quote

I'm hoping Let's Talk! readers can help me trace a series of books I adored as a child but can now find absolutely no trace of. I would have been reading them in the 1970s, and borrowed them from our local library.

They were collections of short stories, and I have a vague memory they were published by Hamlyn. They were all called "The Hamlyn Book of ...." and the stories were accompanied by fabulous black and white drawings that were probably done in pencil.

The stories were all like 'fairy tales' and the books were themed - so there would be The Hamlyn Book of Mermaids and Mermen (I do remember that one), The Hamlyn Book of Ghosts and Goblins (my favourite), etc.

I seem to think that someone call Robin (or Robert) Jaques was involved with the books - either as writer or artist.

I've been trying to trace these books for many years without success, so would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Many thanks,

Tom Holland

Tom,

There are many second-hand 'Hamlyn books of .....' available on line.  You could try Abebooks.  I just did a search there and found dozens of titles dating back to the early sixties.

Good luck!

Bill
